Texas Flooding: Infrastructure Interdependencies

Two examples of cascading infrastructure impacts and infrastructure interdependencies from the Texas Flooding:

  • Baptist Beaumont Hospital is evacuating because of a city water outage. No power issues and they have generators, but you need running water for patient care.
  • The chemical plant fire/explosion at the Arkema chemical plant in Crosby, TX is due to power outages, and apparent issues with backup power due to flooding.

Both situations impact/cascade into other critical infrastructure sectors, including the Health and Medical sector, and the Emergency Services Sector.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) partners with critical infrastructure sectors in an established framework for infrastructure protection and resilience.
