Washington Only Works When You Have Friends
Friday, August 11, 2017
Here's something I learned about getting things done in Washington, DC, from my 11 years there.
You have to have allies. Everyone has allies. You'll never know all of theirs, and no one will ever know all of yours. It's a dance, of trust and risk.
If you navigate it well, you'll make progress. If you blow it, you can go down way faster than you could ever have imagined.
The president, with seven months in Washington, clearly does not understand this. The man is going after the very people that stand between him and impeachment and/or Article 25. He's not building alliances, and we know who his allies are. There's no poker face capability.
If there was ever a way for Republicans in Congress to recognize the national security crisis this administration brings, perhaps personal insults from Trump will help clear the fog.
Washington only works if you have friends.
